Kaplan Axial Flow Saxo Turbine (Z-Type)

Kaplan axial flow Saxo vertical turbine (Z-Type), is a double regulated vertical axis turbine with a conical distributor. It is similar to a Kaplan S-Type turbine, in that it is consistent to the IEC 61364 code. The major difference being a vertical shaft with a similar intake and draft tube. The most significant advantage of the Kaplan Saxo turbine versus other Kaplan turbines, is the compact structure. This can decrease the civil construction costs for a hydropower project.

Renfrew Thomas Low, Ontario

This project doubled the output of the existing powerhouses, while using the same volume of water. The lower plant (built in 1902), and the upper plant (built in 1911 – 1912) had a total capacity of 2 MW. The new Thomas Low plant was built beside the lower plant. For this redevelopment project, Norcan provided two new Kaplan axial flow Saxo 55 in., 1400 mm diameter 2MW turbines. With a total installed capacity of 4 MW. Norcan's scope of work included engineering, project management, manufacturing of the turbines, supply of the generators, installation, and commissioning. Elliot Falls, Ontario

This site has gone through many changes. It was first built in 1904 in order to power a cement company. The cement company went out of business, but the power station continued to provide power to the local area until 1928. Over the years, there were various attempts to bring the station back into operation. None of the attempts were successful. That is until 1989 when the site was back in operation. Since its reopening, there was a redevelopment project for which Norcan delivered two new Kaplan axial flow Saxo 59 in., 1500 mm diameter, 400 kW turbines. With a total installed capacity of 800 kW. Norcan's scope of work included engineering, project management, manufacturing of the turbines, supply of the generators, installation, and commissioning. Norcan provides innovative turbine solutions.
