FRANCIS Turbine Conventional
Considering a new greenfield project, especially for a modernization project, the NORCAN FRANCIS conventional turbine (vertical or horizontal) will significantly increase the power output and annual energy production across the turbine range. The result of NORCAN research and development optimization with the most advanced modern hydraulic geometries for higher efficiencies. NORCAN fundamental strategy is to increase their FRANCIS turbine range efficiencies to benefit the hydropower plant owners. As a reference of case and point in the short survey of selected sample projects below, Smooth Rocks Falls modernization of two old FRANCIS vertical turbines with two new NORCAN FRANCIS verticals turbines increased the power output by 38%, same rated head, same rated flows. The results validate the technology of the new modern NORCAN FRANCIS conventional turbine delivering more power output with a significant increase of the annual energy production potential for a greener and more sustainable future while maximizing the power plant revenue for decades of dependable operations. NORCAN R&D in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD, FEA, and FMEA engineers collaborate with one of Europe's top turbine hydraulic fluid machinery dynamic laboratories supporting NORCAN in Austria. Numerical Simulation is successfully applied with CFD, and FMEA from the laboratory research analysis on homologous runners on physical test rig experimental trials from our turbine hydraulic fluid lab cooperation in Austria for acceptance and approval. Test according to IEC 60193, ISO 9906, IEC 60534. Best quality made in Canada with core components sourced in Canada and the U.S.A.
Short Survey of Selected Sample Projects
Smooth Rocks Falls 10.2 MW, Ontario
NORCAN successfully completed the modernization of a plant in operation since 1916. It had an existing power output of 7.4 MW. The two new NORCAN Francis vertical turbines combined capacity of 10.9 MW, increased the power output by 38%. They used the same structure (no civil work), same rated head, same rated flows! 10.2 MW Installed Capacity 2 x Francis Vertical 5134kW 128.5 RPM ∅ 100-in (2544mm). NORCAN's scope of supply also included the onsite assembly of two split generators, due to logistic issues and the capacity limitations of the powerhouse's crane.
