NORCAN technologies, performances on KAPLAN turbine, FRANCIS turbine, Propeller turbine, and PELTON turbine are on par with the Top Tier turbine manufacturers in the world. NORCAN R&D in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD, CAD, FEA, and FMEA engineers collaborate with a world-leading turbine hydraulic fluid machinery dynamic laboratories supporting NORCAN in Austria. The Numerical Simulation is successfully applied with CFD, and FMEA from the laboratory research analysis based on homologous runners with their physical test rig experimental trials in Austria for acceptance and approval. Test according to IEC 60193, ISO 9906, IEC 60534. The cooperation significantly increases NORCAN turbine efficiencies for more power output and annual energy production to maximize the hydropower plant owner’s revenue. NORCAN will deliver for your project modern and high-performance turbines with the Best Quality made in Canada with core components sourced in Canada and the U.S.A.
FRANCIS Turbine
FRANCIS turbines are reaction-type turbines combining radial and axial flow and are the most common type of turbine in use today. Mr. James B. FRANCIS developed this type of turbine, which was named after him in 1849. The first hydropower FRANCIS turbine was installed in Appleton on the Fox River in Wisconsin in 1882. Francis turbines are used with low to medium heads (pressure) 15-ft (5-m) up to 985-ft (300-m) or more, with medium flow rates.
Maximum NORCAN FRANCIS turbine power per unit up to 30 MW, maximum NORCAN runner Ø 100-in (2544-mm) fabrication, machining, assembly is done in-house. Largest NORCAN in-house FRANCIS runner diameter made for Smooth Rocks Falls, Ontario 100-in (2544-mm) 5.2 MW. Above Ø 100-in (2544-mm), the FRANCIS runners are outsourced at our ISO-certified Canadian supplier, while the balance of manufacturing, fit & finish, QA-QC-QMS, FAT, assembly, and balancing is done in-house at NORCAN.

KAPLAN Turbine
KAPLAN turbines reaction type of turbines are the most common type of turbine today for low heads. Mr. Victor KAPLAN developed this type of turbine in 1913 named it after him. The first KAPLAN turbine was installed in the Podebrady powerhouse Czech Republic in 1919. KAPLAN turbines are used with low to medium heads (pressure) 15-ft (5-m) up to 985-ft (300-m) or more, and large rates.
Maximum NORCAN KAPLAN runner and Propeller runner Ø 115-in (2921-mm) fabrication, machining, assembly done in-house. Largest NORCAN in-house KAPLAN runner diameter 115-in (2921-mm) made for the Gorge project 4.0 MW @ 180 RPM. Above Ø 115-in (2921-mm), the KAPLAN runners are outsourced at our ISO certified cooperation supplier, while the manufacturing and assembly in-house at NORCAN. Largest outsourced KAPLAN turbine runner Ø 128-in (3250-mm) for project Madawaska 4.0MW @ 138.5 RPM. Above 115-in (2921-mm), the KAPLAN runners are outsourced at our ISO-certified Canadian supplier. The balance of manufacturing, fit & finish, QA-QC-QMS, FAT, assembly, and balancing is done in-house at NORCAN.

Largest NORCAN in-house Propeller runner diameter 89.99-in (2286-mm) 3.9 MW @ 240 RPM. Above 115-in (2921-mm) the Propeller runners are outsourced at our ISO-certified Canadian supplier, while the balance of manufacturing, fit & finish, QA-QC-QMS, FAT, assembly, and balancing is done in-house at NORCAN.
PELTON Turbine
PELTON turbines are impulse-type turbines combining radial and axial flow. Mr. Lester A. PELTON developed this type of turbine named after him in 1849. The first hydropower PELTON turbine was installed in the Mayflower Mine in Nevada City, California, in 1878. PELTON turbines are used with medium heads to high heads (pressure) 99-ft (30-m) up to 4921-ft (1500-m) or more, with low to medium flow rates.
Maximum NORCAN PELTON runner Ø 119-in (3000-mm) fabrication, machining, assembly done in-house, Maximum NORCAN PELTON output 30 MW. Largest NORCAN in-house PELTON runner Ø 76-in (1930-mm) made for Bishop Creek, California 2.2 MW @ 164 RPM. Above 115-in (2921-mm), the PELTON runners are outsourced at our ISO-certified Canadian supplier. The balance of manufacturing, fit & finish, QA-QC-QMS, FAT, assembly, and balancing is done in-house at NORCAN.
