Job Description

Department:  Field & Shop

Location:       Carleton Place

Job Summary:

Under minimum supervision, performs the duties listed below with complete competence. This position will be up to 80% travel to various job site locations, and field stays can be for 2 weeks at a time. When not in the field, assistance with the shop is required.

Typical Duties (including but not limited to):

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables or study sample parts to determine machining operation to be performed, and plan the best sequence of operations;
  • Maintain Inspection Records and complete inspection reports;
  • Ability to read and follow work procedures and DWIM’s;
  • Field Services Scope:
    • Communicate with clients;
    • Safety Coordination/documentation of daily tailgate and safety meetings;
    • Run the job site, offer technical assistance to subcontractors;
    • Locate and source local vendors for assistance with issues in the field;
    • Document daily fieldwork with Field Reports, including work delays, etc.;
    • Fit and assemble components and subassemblies using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment;
    • Rotary equipment alignment;
    • Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes and jacks to position components during assembly, installation, set-up, and repairs;
    • Inspect and examine equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions;
    • Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and programmable logic controls.
  • Shop Scope:
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out workpieces;
  • Set-up, operate, and maintain manual lathes, milling machines, and CNC machines;
  • Verify dimensions of components for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments;
  • Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes and jacks to position components for machining, or the installation, set-up, and repair of machinery;
  • Inspect and examine machinery to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions;
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery;
  • Assemble equipment before installation using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment;
  • General Welding (asset):
    • Good knowledge of Mig, Tig, Stick.

Essential Skills:

  • Highly motivated; productive within a team environment;
  • Computer skills: Windows, Office, Solidworks, MsProject
  • Welding certifications TSSA or CWB (asset)
  • Excellent listening and analytical skills, with keen attention to detail;
  • Proven problem-solving abilities;
  • Takes an organized and enthusiastic approach to work;
  • Able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, results-oriented environment;
  • Aptitude for following detailed, step-by-step instructions and management direction;
  • Willingness to grow with the position as the role evolves;
  • Ability to lift and transport large, moderately heavy equipment;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings;
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Bilingual, English/French (Asset).

  • Norcan’s current programs and services, proprietary systems, company policies, and goals
  • General Machining (Lathe, Vertical and Horizontal Boring Mills, CNC Equipment)
  • Precision Measuring equipment and Shop Safety
  • ISO Standards as they apply to Design and Manufacturing
  • Rotary Equipment Alignment
  • Hoisting & Rigging, WHMIS, Forklift, and other shop safety programs
  • First Aid
  • Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights

Education/Minimum Requirement:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • College Millwright or Machining diploma and/or completed an apprenticeship program
  • Welding course and/or 5 years welding experience (asset)
  • Red Seal (asset)

Working Conditions:

  • Working in a construction site, powerhouse, shop, PPE required at all times.
  • Working overtime
  • Lifting and transporting heavy equipment
  • Will be required to travel out of the country for work, primarily in the United States of America.
